"My wife was known as the deer lady," Frank Solecki said of his late wife, Diane Solecki, who dedicated herself to rescuing and caring for injured and orphaned wildlife, especially deer fawns, before passing away Oct. 25 at the age of 72.

A state-licensed newborn deer fawn rehabilitation expert, she would bring rescued animals home to her and her husband's 1860s farmhouse on the eastern edge of Putnam Township, bottle-feed them goat milk and care for them until they were old enough to go live at the Howell Conference and Nature Center.
