Group hopes to put deer issue on ballot for Ann Arbor voters to decide

The shooting of deer that's happening right now in Ann Arbor parks and nature areas is expected to be the first in a series of annual culls.

That's the city's plan.

But citizens against killing deer in Ann Arbor have other plans.

Robert McGee, founder of Ann Arbor Residents for Nonlethal Deer Management, said at Monday night's City Council meeting he and other opponents of the cull are getting ready to start collecting petition signatures to force a public vote in November on a city charter amendment to prohibit future culls.

McGee hopes to have the petition language ready by next week. After that, work on collecting 4,500-plus signatures to put the issue before voters begins.
